SCAR/Jasper Mountain is in its third decade in serving children and their families.  Its services have ‘organically’ grown over the years to form an extensive continuum of programs that address most of the needs of emotionally disturbed children and their families.  With a primary mission to help stop child abuse, the agency has developed specializations in areas such as attachment issues, sexual reactivity, anti-social and violent behavior and treating severe trauma.  All programs are guided by the agency philosophy to treat the intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs of the child – thus treating the whole person.  All agency services are for children under the age of 12 and their families.  The following are the primary services provided by the agency:

Residential Psychiatric Treatment Program

This is a fully integrated program with treatment and educational interventions.  Located seven miles southeast of Springfield, Oregon on a picturesque mountainside, the Center’s facilities have been architecturally designed and constructed specially with challenging children in mind.  This program specializes in young children who struggle with violent and sexual acting out behavior and who need intensive supervision and intervention.  The program maintains a staff ratio of one staff to three children and has an electronic monitoring system to help staff supervise children at night.  The program has a nationally recognized specialization in attachment disordered children.  Children often have longer stays than other programs due to intensive trauma and attachment therapy.

SAFE Center Assessment and Evaluation Program

This is a short-term (30 to 90 day) assessment and evaluation program for young children in a residential setting.  This evaluation service is only for those children who cannot be adequately evaluated on an outpatient basis or need carefully monitored medication trails.  A full range of evaluation services is offered including medical, psychiatric, psychological and educational.

SAFE Crisis Respite

This service provides crisis stabilization for children who need to be removed from their family for up to 72 hours.  Children are integrated into a structured program of activities and educational services while professional staff work to stabilize the child and offer support to the family as they prepare for the reintegration of the child back into the home.

Treatment Foster Care Program

This service places children in need of  treatment in a family setting with trained parents providing a highly structured home.  The program recruits, trains and provides follow up support to families who work with one or two children.  The children receive outpatient treatment from agency therapists and the parents have 24 hour a day access to program staff.  Back up respite and emergency stabilization are available to families in the program.  Families are trained in the treatment philosophy of the agency.

The Village Program

This program provides the type of support and treatment needed in the location it is needed--the family.  Agency staff work with families as partners and involve other community organizations such as schools, churches, and youth activity programs to help the child and support the family.  Services are based on each child and family’s needs but can include:  respite, behavioral support, emergency response, and home-based activities.  This service can be combined with day treatment or as after care for other agency services.

Day Treatment and SCAR/Jasper Mountain School

Located on two rural sites, our school is fully certified by the Oregon Department of Education as a private school for regular and special education and is approved as an alternative to public education.  Children are provided both academic and therapeutic services based upon their needs.  Individual, group and family therapy are offered as well as in home support to families.  This program runs throughout the year.

Out-of-State Placements

SCAR/Jasper Mountain is frequently asked to provide residential services to children from states other than Oregon.  Due to this, the intensive psychiatric treatment program maintains a capacity to serve out-of-state children and their families.  The program has experience with these challenging situations from as far away as Hawaii to the east coast and has developed methods to make treatment effective despite long distances.  An apartment is provided at the program for use by guests from out of the area.
